Pneumatic Tube Opener
Background:
At the Duke Hospital system, the pneumatic tube system transports thousands of lab samples and other valuable items using pneumatic tube carriers (PTC). However, this poses an occupational hazard for lab workers who must manually open the PTCs every 20 seconds, resulting in muscle strain and fatigue. This Device Opens a PTC with minimal ergonomic strain on the user's hand and wrist joints and is usable in a hospital lab setting.
Softwares and Machines:
Fusion 360 and Solidworks for 3D printing different components of the Pneumatic Tube Opener. Other smaller components were designed with the help of laser cutters.
